Does your job fit you?

Ergonomics can be defined simply as the study of work. More specifically, ergonomics is the science of designing the job to fit the worker, rather than physically forcing the worker’s body to fit the job.

Repetitive strain injuries happen when workers do the same motion and work in the same position for long periods. These static body positions can cause muscle tension and reduce the blood flow to muscles. These injuries often occur when workstations or work environments are not properly suited to the worker.

Often, outdated or unsuitable furniture contributes to workplace injuries. There are many cases of workers getting injuries from machines that are not properly operating.  There are reported cases of people having lumbar problems because of improper postures and because of non-adjustable office chairs.  Even the increased usage of computers has also brought about an increase count of people with carpal tunnel syndrome.

The key to preventing these injuries is to work smart by:
•            varying tasks to change body positions
•            developing good work/rest schedules
•            using proper lifting techniques
•            properly positioning desks, chairs and desk lamps.
•            using the proper technique for keyboarding (wrist relaxed, not bent or hyper-extended)
•            not sitting for more than 50 minutes at a time
•            not working at a desk/table that is too high, or too low
•            sitting so that your body is properly positioned

Nowadays, possibilities are endless in terms of ergonomics.  For example, there are hundreds of ergonomic chairs available that offer varied heights, inclination, backrest, seat width and depth, swivels, etc. Most companies are taking comfort and ergonomics as a factor in updating their offices.

Don't be ashamed to talk to your supervisors if you feel that you're not comfortable in your office.  It is a part of their responsibility to know that employees can work comfortably and with 100% assurance that there are no hazards in your workplace.

Remember, a healthy you need a healthy working environment!
